Te Taitokerau’s first iwi station turned 21 last Saturday.
Radio Tautoko, established in November 1983 by Te Whare Awhina o te Iwi Community Trust, has come a long way since its dedicated but inexperienced volunteers struggled through those first broadcasts from a small shed in Mangamuka.
Now with a staff of 21 and long relationships with neighbouring stations Ngati Hine FM and Te Hiku o te Ika in Kaitaia, Radio Tautoko boasts a round-the-clock programme representative of the local community.
Celebrations for the milestone event included an open invitation whanau hui at Mangamuka Marae where guests Sons of Zion, Ruia Aperahama and two-times platinum single selling hip-hoppers, Smashproof entertained enthusiastic supporters.
